You Will Need ID for Surveys for the First Time in These 5 States

Following the 2016 presidential election, state legislatures passed about 500 pieces of legislation regarding voting , ProPublica reports . And in some states, understanding change may be the difference between gaining the right to vote and refusing to vote.

Since 2016, Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, and Texas have passed new laws requiring ID for surveys, according to a ProPublica report. Here’s what voters in these states need to know:

Arkansas ‘ voter ID law is currently being challenged in the state supreme court, but voters should plan for it not to be in effect until November. Voters must present photo ID; if they don’t have one, they can sign affidavits, according to the National Conference of State Legislators .
Iowa voters will be required to present an Iowa driver’s license, non-Iowa ID, military ID, US passport, tribal ID, veteran ID, or voter ID. This year, they will be allowed to sign an identity vow if they do not have one of these forms of ID, but starting in 2019, they will only be allowed to vote in advance.
Missouri voters will need some form of ID, although it doesn’t have to include a photograph. If you don’t have a photo ID, you’ll see what else you can bring here .
Voters of North Dakota must provide proof of identity, such as a driver’s license or tribal ID; if they do not have one, they can give up the provisional ballot, but they must show the appropriate identification to the election official within six days of the election for their vote to be counted.
Texas voters must provide one of seven forms of government-issued identification, such as a driver’s license or passport. If they do not have one, they must sign affidavits proving their identity. The law is controversial because it “provides criminal penalties for those who falsely testify in their affidavits,” according to the New York Times , “that, according to critics of the law, are misleading and intimidating to potential voters.”
