How to Block and Unblock Your Chase Credit Card

If you’ve ever temporarily lost your credit card and panicked to close your account, Chase now offers credit card users an alternative: you can block and unblock the card from your phone or computer. The feature is already available for credit cards and will debut later this year for debit cardholders.

Blocking your card will block transactions, cash advances, and balance transfers, but will not affect recurring transactions (such as automatic bill payments), according to the press release. If you find your card, you can simply unlock it through the desktop app or site – and you can request a new card if it is truly lost.

To block your card on a desktop site, you simply:

  • Log in to your account and click on your credit card on the left side of the user page under Credit Cards & Products.
  • Then click on the “What you can do” menu and click on “Block and Unblock Card” in the services section of your account.
  • Press the lock / unlock switch and you’re done. You can also unblock the card here if you find it.

In the mobile app:

  • Log into your account and find the credit card you want to block (it should be listed on the main page of the application).
  • Click the three dots below the card.
  • Select “Block and Unblock Card”.

And it’s all. Chase says he will send you an email if the purchase is declined while your card is blocked, in the meantime you can rest easy. If it takes you more than a few days to find a card, you should cancel it and request a new one.

Amex recently announced a lock / unlock feature, while Bank of America, Capital One, Discover, and Wells Fargo are offering something similar.
