Help Your Child Remember Your Phone Number With This Trick
It is important for young children to know their parents’ phone number in case of an emergency. But memorizing 10 incoherent numbers is no easy task. 732-479-6 … 1 … yeah, let’s start over! Help them chat a little. As Jen Rice discovered from the Playdough to Plato blog , thetheme song for Mickey Mouse Clubhouse works great. (Or, if you want to keep the old style, try the original 1955 Mickey Mouse Club theme song .) Just replace the letters MICKEYMOUSE with a phone number and whoever owns it. So the song would be like this:
“3-7-4-5-8-4-2-9-3-1-MOTHER!”
With a little practice, the number will get stuck in their brains, and the melody will get stuck in yours (sorry).
A few more effective methods of teaching children a phone number:
- Play “classics with phone numbers.” Use chalk to draw a dial pad on the sidewalk, then see how quickly they can step on the correct numbers in order. It looks like a low tech version of Dance Dance Revolution .
- Have your child order pizza for your family . With pepperoni pie as a motivator, they’ll quickly learn those numbers. (I know that being able to buy shoes without reaching for my wallet was an incentive for me to remember my credit card number.)
- Likewise, make the number your iPad passcode. (In the password options in your preferences, switch to your own numeric code.) You’ll be amazed at how fast these little fingers can type.
