Create Immersive Maps With Your Data
If you collect a lot of geographic data for research, or if you enjoy digging through census files or other databases full of statistics, you have a new tool for visualizing that data on a 3D dynamic map. Uber has released Kepler.gl, an open source mapping software with a simple interface for loading sorted data.
Kepler.gl is built on the Mapbox mapping platform, the tools of which we have already reviewed earlier. Mapbox explains what they’ve created and what you can do about it , and Fast Company shows you some of the best implementations of this technology .
We find this kind of visualization to be more useful for exploring geographic information than numbers and charts. For example, you can see travel maps for England or New York City in 3D , which gives you a better idea of geography than a list of numbers. You can find more maps and visualizations in the Twitter #keplergl tag .
