You Can Now Speak Spanish Using the Google Homepage

Google has some Buenas NOTICIAS for Spanish speakers who own Google Home Smart Speakers: You can now communicate with Google Assistant in Spanish.

Google Assistant can already speak Spanish on Android, and it launched to users in the US, Mexico and Spain last November. And since Wednesday, Google Home (including Mini and Max) joins their ranks in time for the speaker’s debut in Spain.

After waking up, “Ok Google” is still displayed, but after that you can speak your questions in Spanish. For example, “Enciende las luces” can turn on the light. Or say “¿Qué hay en mi calendario?” to see what’s on your calendar.

To switch the language of your Google Home , you just need to change the setting in the app. First, open the Google Home app ( iOS , Android ) on your smartphone or tablet. Click the Menu button in the upper right corner and then click Advanced Settings. Find the speaker in the Devices section and tap it. Then tap “Assistant Language” and scroll down. You can choose Español (Spain), Español (Mexico) or Español (Estados Unidos).

Google Home understands English very much, so hopefully native Spanish speakers will find it responsive – it understands my Spanish perfectly at high school level, with a terrible accent and all. It can also be a convenient way to practice Spanish at home, although unfortunately I need to improve my skills in order to understand the Assistant’s quick answers. Qué lástima.
