What Should We Bake for Independence Day?
Hello and welcome back to Will It Casserole? , a column in which I take your delicious concepts and reimagine them as delicious casserole creations. Our latest casserole creation was a slightly tweaked classic and turned out very well, but it’s time to move on to our next task.
Casseroles aren’t exactly what I crave on these doggy summer days, but I don’t remember anywhere in the casserole Bible says casseroles are (by law) supposed to be served hot. (I think it’s a good thing we didn’t name this column “Will this be a hot dish?”) Conversely, people don’t just eat cold food from June to August; it’s about finding something that won’t stick to your ribs and weigh you down. Also, with the 4th of July approaching, we have the opportunity to pick up a theme (my favorite). Some ideas:
- Picnic salad casserole: All your favorite salads – potatoes, pasta, eggs, and more – are finally together.
- American Casserole: My first urge was to fill it with hamburgers, hot dogs and chips, but tell me what America means to you (in terms of food).
- Corn casserole: Because corn is the real reason for the summer season.
- Tomato Casserole: Like a tomato pie, but in a casserole shape. I would like to attract cheddar biscuits.
- Ice Cream Casserole: I imagine layers of different types of ice cream, fruits and cookies with some kind of crunchy sweet filling.
As always, feel free to recommend your own ideas for non-hot dishes below, the more themed the better.
