How to Install IOS 12 Public Beta Now

Happy beta day! Apple has finally released iOS 12 to the masses of non-developers – assuming you didn’t use a neat trick a few weeks ago to register yourself for beta testing .

If you’re ready to test out the latest and greatest version of Apple’s iOS, assuming the company has fixed some kinks that might otherwise break your favorite apps , getting iOS 12 is easy. Again, the caveat that iOS 12, while fairly stable (at least in my experience over the past few weeks), can cause you problems with apps you love or use throughout the day. IMMV, as they say.

Back up your device

Before starting your adventures in the beta testing world, make sure you have recently backed up your device. If you do this via iCloud, chances are good that you already have a fairly recent backup on your iPad or iPhone – assuming your device has been connected to Wi-Fi within the last day or so.

You can also run the backup manually if you like. Just open Settings, tap your name or face, tap iCloud, tap iCloud Backup (scroll down a bit) and tap Back Up Now. Easy peasy. You can also plug your device into your desktop or laptop and run the backup manually via iTunes, a slightly older method but just as reliable.

Go to the Apple Software Beta Program website.

Ready? All you need to do to get the public beta of iOS 12, – is go to the website of the program beta software Apple and click “register” or “enter”. I recommend doing this in Safari on your iOS device. Even if you’ve signed up before, open the website in Safari on your iOS device. This is important because you will be given a link to download the beta profile to your device after authenticating with the site, and the whole process seems to work best in Safari – get it.

During the beta profile installation, you will be prompted to restart your device. Do it.

Getting iOS 12 Beta from Apple

After restarting your iPhone or iPad, log in to your device. Make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi (and still has a pretty good connection). Then open the Settings app. Click General and then click Software Update.

You should see an option to download and install the beta. Touch it, sit back and let the process chug. As soon as it boots up and you confirm that you are ready to install it, it will start working, and after a while you will have a completely new (test) version of iOS 12. Have fun!
