How to Disable Nudges in Gmail Desktop and Mobile

One of the great new features in Gmail is a “nudge,” which moves certain emails to the top of your inbox and prompts you to take action. These are actually two functions: Gmail asks if you want to reply to a received email and if you want to follow up on an email sent. Gmail has included both nudging for all users on the web and in the Gmail mobile app, whether you want to or not. Luckily, you can turn off nudging in the settings. Here’s how:

Desktop

  1. Click the gear icon in the upper right corner, then click Options.
  2. Scroll down to “Nudges” and uncheck one or both of the check boxes.
  3. Scroll down and click “Save Changes”.

Mobile

  1. Tap the three-line icon in the upper left corner, then scroll down and tap Settings (gear icon) at the bottom.
  2. Tap the account you want to change the settings for.
  3. Scroll down to Nudges and click Answers & Follow-up.
  4. Tap one or both of the radio buttons.
