How to Join Today’s Family Separation Protests at the Border
If you’re feeling helpless about the Trump administration’s family separation at the border, you can make a name for yourself at one of the dozens of rallies taking place across the country today , June 14 . A grassroots coalition, Families Belong, is spearheading a nationwide action against the “cruel, inhuman and unjustified separation of children from their parents” along the US-Mexican border and other points of entry.
With the page group in Facebook :
We are protesting against the conditions of detention of these children. We protest the irreversible trauma that has already been inflicted on these children and their parents for the crime in search of a better life. To divide the families of immigrants, victims of violence, hunger and poverty, means to re-rape them.
You can find information about a march or rally near you on the Families Belong Together website .
As a reminder from the American Civil Liberties Union , if you protested, you have the First Amendment right to:
- Peacefully collect
- Photograph or videotape the police
- Protest in public places
- Take a picture of something in plain sight
For those unable to attend in person, there is also a virtual event called Lunchtime for Chang e, which will take place today at 12:00 pm ET . During the 1-hour online rally, attendees are encouraged to take as many actions as possible on this list , including signing petitions, contacting your elected officials, making donations to organizations working to protect separated children, and spreading awareness on social media. …
Alicia Garcia, a community organizer, also tweeted a list of real ways to get involved – for example, you can raid your toilets and donate items to refugees (which is exactly what Catholic charities need for the Rio Grande Valley Humanitarian Respite Center ) or campaign in their cities, counties and states, requiring your governments to fund legal services for people undergoing the deportation process.
Whether you’re walking down the street or signing a petition during your lunch break, every effort will help.
