Fight Fake News With This Chrome Extension
Chrome: the same company, which is engaged in the development of open source software, which wants to in your browser did not get crappy ads, also wants to “false news” does not enrich your life. Or at least Eyeo wants to show you if your favorite news sites are full of FUD and bias. And if this is your cup of tea, take a big, hard sip; otherwise, you can move on knowing that you have not been drawn into outrageous statements and outright falsifications.
The new Eyeo Trusted News extension , currently available in beta for Chrome, rates the news sites you visit based on critical reviews from four different sources:
When you visit a site that most trusted news sources consider a legitimate news provider , you will see a small green checkmark. Keep reading; you are safe. If the site is blatantly satire , you will see a blue emoticon. Laugh, laugh and laugh, but don’t post this content on Facebook as a real warning to your friends and family.
According to Trusted News analysis, if a site “knowingly publishes false and / or misleading information,” it receives a red exclamation mark. Bad. Sites promoting politically biased content receive an orange bar icon, while sites that are clearly bait for clicks receive a red bull’s eye. If you like visiting sites full of malware, check the big red cross.
Of course, one person’s satire is another person’s Sunday newspaper, and Eyeo’s chief communications officer Ben Williams recently told TechCrunch that the company also aims to include user ratings in its analysis:
“So initially what we’re going to do in a few weeks is to include something that users can just provide feedback through the extension. And they can argue something. They might say, “Hi, I don’t think this site should be listed as biased for any reason.” And we’re going to use that feedback to make the product better. ”
“And then the next step is to decouple this from any server and from any third party and pass it directly to the blockchain. So that this feedback can exist on its own in this place and so that good reviews can be appreciated and rewarded among users, but people who provide bad reviews do not. So this is the next step. “
Yes, blockchain. Didn’t you hear? Everyone needs their own special currency that will make them a millionaire if they take off. And obviously, if you provide reliable data on the legitimacy of the news sites you like , you could earn a few “ MetaCert tokens ” that will hopefully someday be worth more thanStanley’s nickel .
So how does Trusted News work? CNN gets a green check – sorry, President Trump – and Breitbart gets an orange scale for “bias!” NPR has high scores with a green checkmark as what else are you going to wake up to in the morning and Fox News goes green as well. For sites like the Angry Patriot Movement , you probably don’t need an extension to tell you the score, but your friends or family can.
