Check Your Next Nail Polish Color With an Augmented Reality App
iOS / Android: I got my nails done a few weeks ago and it was great, but I highly recommend trying out Wanna Nails ( iOS , Android ) before heading to the salon so you don’t have to fiddle with choosing a color. And if you’re more of a DIY nail care professional, you may not want to buy a color that you end up hating. Let the augmented reality experience help you see different colors on your nails with a touch of your finger.
In my case, the choice of color was easy: black. As for the backstory, I was invited to hang out and get a pedicure from the members of the musical ensemble I was in who were all keen to pump up their nails for our big premiere later that week. I love to gossip, rub my feet and follow helpful advice , so I decided to join them.
I don’t know much about manicure apart from these special moments, but many Lifehacker readers have it, and Wanna Nails should be tightened up before heading to the salon (or propping up your feet where you usually do shellac). …
The idea behind the app is simple: you take a photo of your hand or leg. Wanna Nails detects where your nails are, and then you can scroll through a bunch of different colors of nails to see how your real hand would look with each one. It is so simple.
The Android version of the app – on my Pixel 2 at least – gives you a little “hand overlay” that you use to align your hand when composing an image. However, on my iPhone 8 Plus, the colored nails would automatically appear on my hand to indicate that the app had correctly removed the colored parts from the fleshy pieces. When I shot an image on any device, I had no problem with new colors appearing in the right places.
You can of course purchase certain nail polishes that are in the app from the various affiliate links it offers. You can’t import your own nail polish, so this sparkling neon green color you looked at Sephora just has to live in your imagination – that is, if you’re too lazy to try it in person. However, the app allows you to compare four different colors on a grid, and you can easily share potential selections on social media for a second opinion.
Even if you don’t buy anything that you don’t feel obligated to, this is a great way to see what different shades of nail polish can look like in the comfort of your home.
