How to Get Do Not Disturb While Driving Mode for Any Android Phone
Android: In a perfect world, we would all ignore our phones while driving, but the sad truth is that some people just can’t resist the rise in dopamine in a new text message or Facebook notification.
Big companies like Apple and Google are already working on solving this problem, even if you are the kind of people who don’t want to be solved. iOS 11 will automatically put your iPhone in Do Not Disturb mode when you’re driving, while the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL offer a similar feature. Now, thanks to a new Android app , you can automatically turn on Do Not Disturb mode on any Android smartphone while driving.
The free Driving Detective app is based on the same Do Not Disturb While Driving software developed by Google for the Pixel 2. It also works with any device running Android 4.1 or later and is easy to set up. Just download the app and open it. You will be prompted for Do Not Disturb access. That’s all.
A driving detective assumes that you are jumping in the car, measuring your current speed – since chances are good that you are not running 35mph to the local Taco Bell (or running home from the Taco Bell if your tummy regrets that your choice of lunch).
The only problem with the app is that it can activate Do Not Disturb when you are using public transport. However, you can easily disable the app by opening it and clicking the switch in the upper right corner. Or you can simply use the app’s “bug” as an opportunity to take a short break from the constant stream of smartphone notifications.
Driving Detective lets you decide whether the app should completely block all notifications or skip priority alerts (reminders, events, alarms, and messages from a selected group of contacts). You can also specify whether the app should launch on weekdays or on weekends – just in case you don’t mind taking a break from one or two while you travel around town, but will crash if you hear another call during your daily trip to work.
