How to Draw Faces

New York City cartoonist Jason Adam Katzenstein has already taught you how to paint with gestures, one of the most basic artistic techniques. In the new video above, he focuses on faces, showing how the principle of “paint what you see” helps you capture someone’s distinctive features.

My most important takeaway is how difficult it is to draw what you actually see , and not start drawing what you imagine or imagine . I drew Jason face forward when I actually saw him at an angle. This made it harder to accurately portray his face. In contrast, look at how Jason cut my eyes and gracefully captured the specks on my beard.

I also learned that if you draw too many pencil lines, you will end up drawing a yeti. I’m sorry Jason! But to draw the good, you first need to draw the bad – and the goal seems so useful to you and to others. When you can accurately paint someone’s face, it feels special because it feels like being seen and you learn how to really see it.

Then watch Jason explain how he draws cartoons .
