Salad Should Be Eaten From a Large Bowl
My diet may lean more towards “raccoon” than “rabbit”, but in fact I am an enthusiastic consumer of salads. It’s not because I’m a big fan of eating what I like, no; this is because a good salad is the perfect combination of flavor and texture. And to best take advantage of the parade of fresh flavors, salads should be eaten from very large bowls.
“But Claire,” you type, “I definitely saw you putting the salad on your plate.” This is because food is easier to photograph when it is on the plate, but large bowls are where they are in terms of food. Once the glamorous shots were taken, I scraped this salad back into the bowl before eating it and it was the right choice.
Salad is best eaten from a large bowl for several reasons. First, if you eat salad, you need a lot of it. Salads are best eaten in large quantities, and a small bowl simply won’t hold the amount you want. Unlike blunt flat plates, mixing bowls have tall, sloping walls that hold slippery vinaigrette-covered pieces in the bowl . The plate has no walls, which means that vegetables and all that can just fly around, not paying attention. Obviously, I can eat something from the plate without spilling everything on the floor, but the large mixing bowl makes this easier and less awkward, and I always try to reduce the awkwardness in my life.
Using a large bowl can also reduce the amount of dishes that need to be washed; just toss and turn, friends! Toss and chew. Honestly, if you’re not sharing, why do something in one bowl and then transfer it to another? The math in the bowl just doesn’t add up, and I hear you are good at math. Finally, eating from a large bowl allows you to see what’s going on there, allowing you to mix, repartition and stir ingredients as needed, creating the perfect snack right through to the end. What, I ask, is the point of a salad if not enjoying the perfect snack?
