How to Find Free Skin Cancer Screening Near You
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, but it can be difficult to find a dermatologist to check your skin. However, as summer approaches, the American Academy of Dermatology is organizing free screenings for skin cancer.
You can find a screening near you here or sign up for email alerts to be notified the next time they appear in your area. Screenings are held all year round, but especially now. (May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month.)
The video above shows you what to expect. If the screening takes place somewhere in private examination rooms, you will have the opportunity to change into a robe and undergo a full body examination. Otherwise, the examination will only be carried out on open areas of the skin.
The doctor will ask if you have a specific mole or area that is bothering you, then examine as much of your skin as possible and notify you if there is anything unusual. You may be advised to simply monitor the mole over time, or they may recommend that you get a biopsy (removal of the mole and testing for cancer).
Until then – or if you can’t come for a checkup – check out AAD ‘s self -check tips and their printed body moles map so you can take notes of what you see.
