These Vaping Liquids Are Packaged to Look Like Candy
Flavored e- liquids are already attracting teens and young adults to vape . But some e-liquids are even packaged to look like candy – a particularly daring choice for a product that can cause poisoning or death if a young child drinks it.
“It’s easy to see how a child might mistake these e-liquids for something they think they’ve had in the past, such as a juice box,” the FDA said in a statement released today. “Young children can be seriously injured from exposure to or ingestion of e-liquids, including death from cardiac arrest, as well as seizures, coma, and respiratory failure.”
The FDA and the Federal Trade Commission have sent 13 warning letters to companies making these products. These include (yes they are all vaping liquids):
- One box of Mad Hit juice
- Candy King Sour Worms and Candy King Batch
- Candy Co Patches
- Pink sticks
- V’Nilla Cookies and Milk
- Whipped strawberry
- Twirly pop
- Sour Smurf Sauce Vape Heads
Product packaging often looks what you’d expect: the Candy King Sour Worms box looks like it would contain gummy worms, V’Nilla Cookies and Milk has an Oreo-like vanilla cookie image, and so on. Some products are more realistic imitations than others, but young children are not careful when reading labels.
The danger is real. Here’s a quote from an FDA letter to the manufacturers of the One Mad Hit Juice Box, which looks like a juice box but contains a bottle of liquid with a strong apple scent:
Given that the One Mad Hit Juice Box e-liquid labeling and / or advertisements describe its nicotine content as 3 mg / ml for a total volume of 180 ml, accidentally swallowing slightly less than a teaspoon will result in the lower limit of death. dose range for an average 2-year-old child. In addition, accidental ingestion of approximately 3% teaspoon will reach the lower end of the acute toxicity range without fatal outcome for the average 2-year-old child.
As always, keep toxic items out of the reach of small children.
