Epic GPS Guided Walking Tours With Detour Free Until May 31st
When I travel, one of my favorite apps is Detour. The app, created by Andrew Mason (the guy behind Groupon), contains walking tours of various major cities, one of which is my hometown of San Francisco.
Unlike your regular walking tour, there are local-told tours in the app that offer more, well, local vibe on the tour. For example, my tour of San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf is narrated in part by a local fisherman. Rather than showing you the usual tourist traps, the audio tour gave me a behind-the-scenes look at where the real fisherman works at the dock, including a narrator who pointed out where his boat was likely moored.
My boyfriend and I took a tour of the San Francisco Tenderloin where we visited the first gay bar in the city and learned specific stories about some of the homeless who live there, and when a friend came from New York we took a tour of the Mission San Francisco area. Francisco, which has a taco pit and some of the area’s most beautiful murals. You can tour the Brooklyn Bridge with Ken Burns or see Union Square with David Rockwell.
Honestly, it’s a lot of fun and exciting to see a city, especially your own.
I did all of them in San Francisco and several in other cities, and often brought friends with me. The only problem is that they weren’t free, which can be a major hurdle when it comes to your friends trying. I think they were worth it (usually around $ 5 apiece), but now until May 31st, you can take advantage of the full suite of tours for free.
The free deal came about because Detour was recently acquired by Bose. Bose plans to eventually integrate Detour content into augmented reality app, but so far
The app currently offers 180 excursions to places such as London, Berlin, Seoul, New Orleans and Boston. If you are traveling to or living in a major city by the end of May, you can see the full list of available cities and download the app here .
