How Many Calories Are in an Extracted Bagel?

Look, we don’t approve of scooping up the insides of your bagel, but you must know the truth: scooping up the chewy insides of your bagel can subtract over a third of the calories in a bagel.

I did a very scientific experiment with a very small sample (one donut), so obviously this study needs to be repeated before it is fully accepted by the scientific community. But the results were impressive: scooping up is a much more effective way to cut down on the calories in a bagel than doing something stupid like ordering light cream cheese instead of regular cheese.

Here’s my math:

  • Nutrition Information from Breugger’s: A 115 g bagel contains 300 calories .
  • Actual bagel: 108 grams, or 282 calories.
  • Bagel minus entrails: 66 grams, which means 172 calories.
  • Total calorie savings: 110 calories.
  • The calories you save by choosing light cream cheese instead of regular cream cheese: only 30.

Use this information carefully; scoop up too many bagels in NYC and reportedly you could wreck NYC . However, if you are making a sandwich and want as much of the filling as possible in your mouth, removing the excess bread can be worthwhile surgery. (PS. Toast it to make croutons.)
