Happy Hour With 3 Ingredients: Blackberry Jam, Blackberries

Happy weekend and welcome back to Happy 3 Ingredient Hour , a weekly drinks column featuring very simple yet delicious libations. I’m at Oxford this week, so I thought we’d make a simplified version of a very British blackberry.

Although America invented cocktails, England invented the blackberry, and the world is a better place for it. The drink is usually made with gin, lemon juice, plain syrup and blackberry liqueur, which is fine, but it has too many ingredients. Also, I didn’t want to buy another bottle of liquor, so I took the jam jar and ditched the syrup entirely. (Don’t worry, I increased the amount of gin to compensate for the lack of liquor.) To make it yourself, you will need:

  • 2 1/2 ounce gin
  • 30 grams of lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons excellent blackberry jam

Mix everything in a shaker with ice and shake until too cold to handle. Strain through a fine mesh sieve into a small ball filled with crushed ice and garnish with a stripe, lemon zest, or blackberry if you have one.
