Access Blocked Sites in China With Project Fi
Android: Project Fi already makes it cheap and easy to use your phone globally without having to change a new SIM card in every country, but if you’re planning a trip to China there is one good reason to check out Google’s service. …
One writer at Android Authority recently took his Fi-enabled phone to China and found that the service allowed him to bypass all internet censorship in the country without any additional software. The Chinese government is blocking many different websites , including Facebook, all Google services (Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Drive, etc.), and various news sites. Most people work around this problem by using a VPN to spoof their location, but Project Fi seems to perform just as well.
It is unclear exactly how Google is able to bypass China’s restrictions on the Internet. The article suggests it may have something to do with the deal the company signed to provide 4G services across the country. It’s also possible that the government doesn’t care much about when foreigners use Project Fi to access censored websites, as this service is not actually used by anyone living in China.
Whatever the reason, this is a useful trick if you’re heading to China anytime soon, especially if you need regular access to any sites or services blocked in the country. Project Fi works with several Android phones, including the Google Pixel 2 and the low-cost Android One Moto X4 . You can go to the official Fi website for a complete list of supported phones, as well as more information on how to set up the service.
