You Have an Extra Day to File Your Tax Return After the IRS Website Crashes
Congratulations procrastinators, you have an extra day to file your tax return this year thanks to a timely glitch on the IRS Direct Pay page.
During tax day, claimants received a last-minute error message stating that the site would not be available until December 31, 9999, although payments were still pending. The shutdown was delayed until early evening. Thus, the agency is giving the filing parties on Wednesday 18 April to submit their reports.
It is not clear what caused the shutdown. The New York Times reports that “the IRS has stated that the problem is most likely hardware-related and not as a result of a cyber-attack.”
Of course, you shouldn’t wait until the last minute to file your tax returns for this very reason, although you can send them in the old-fashioned way: regular mail (however , security experts warn that this should not be done because paper returns are easily intercepted by fraudsters) … And you don’t have to use the IRS website – there are many different filing options to choose from .
CNBC says the IRS estimates it will receive 14 million renewal requests. If you still need more time, here’s how to file your own extension , but remember that you still need to pay what you owe now.
