How to Drink Tea Like a King, According to a Royal Butler
The royal wedding is just around the corner. While a lot of champagne is likely to be poured on this day, tea drinking is also an important part of the royal family’s day – and there are rules.
Business Insider recently spoke with Grant Harrold , a former royal butler. He says that if you are a royal, there are several rules for how to drink tea, namely:
Add milk to tea after pouring tea from the teapot, never before. The whole idea of ”adding milk before tea” dates back to the time when tea was drunk from glasses that cracked when hot liquid was first poured. If you are using good porcelain, tea will work for you first.
And when it comes to stirring tea, it’s best to do it in a reciprocating motion rather than circular. Harold says that stirring the tea in circles can “cause a teacup storm” and cause the tea to fly around. It also makes a ringing sound when your spoon hits the rim of the glass, which can potentially annoy other people in the tea party.
As for this whole pinky myth, Harrold says he “never saw this happen,” so keep that pinky away while you drink with the queen next month.
