Easily Identify All Devices on Your Network With the Fing App
What’s on your network? You can always open your router’s web interface to see what devices are connected, but you will probably just get a list of MAC addresses and assigned IP addresses, which is not very useful. The Fing – Network Scanner app ( iOS , Android ) is a great free way to get a better understanding of all the devices your router deals with.
Once you’ve installed it, it’s very easy to use Fing. Just open the app. That’s all. Once you launch it, Fing will automatically start trying to identify all devices on your network. You will see all of their IP addresses, their names – or at least any name that Fing can distinguish – and maybe even a small icon that will give you a quick way to find out which device is a smartphone, printer or smart home. … hub and so on.
Fing also tries to find out the brands and models of your connected devices – a search method that you can turn on and off as you like if you don’t want your devices’ IP and MAC addresses to be sent to the app’s “Fingpedia” service. (Fing does not require you to create an account or link an email address to use this feature.)
If you click on any specific device on your list, Fing will allow you to add a specific name, a description of what the device is, and a small note to remind you where you put it in your home or apartment. This is useful if, say, you need to remember which smart switch is which. Fing also keeps a small log of events when devices appear or disappear on your network, and you can ping any device directly from the Fing app to see if it’s available.
