Relive the 90s With This Original Windows 10 File Manager Port
Personal computers have come a long way since the 1990s. We’re not too keen on reliving the limited, early days of Windows software , but if you’re feeling nostalgic , Microsoft just released an older version of its original file manager that you can now run on your modern computer.
Right. You can take the program originally released for Windows 3.0 in 1990 and run it on a new Windows 10 computer. The “WinFile” software is available through Github , where you will also find some sketchy instructions on how to run it. The entire project is supported by Craig Wittenberg, current Microsoft Development Manager who has been with the company since 1982.
Windows File Manager definitely seems like a holdover from another time. While Microsoft has not abandoned the basic concept of organizing and presenting directories and files in Windows, the company has certainly improved this process since the release of Windows 3.0 over 25 years ago.
WinFile sticks to the old school, beautifully showcasing the outdated look and feel – including pixel art for icons – of file management in a forgotten age of computing. However, at the time, the file manager was a much needed improvement over the alternative:MS-DOS textcommands or uglier DOS shells. Microsoft’s approach has made it easy to move, delete, copy and find files, ensuring we’re still not working from the command line in 2018 (unless you really want to).
