Google Voice Adds Wi-Fi and Data Calling in New Beta Test

Google Voice has always been a reliable service (even if it hasn’t received much love from the company), but there is one obvious feature that has been lacking for years: Wi-Fi calling or mobile data . Aldeady no!

If you use Google Voice, you probably know how annoying it is to try to make calls in a poorly connected area when you have a perfect Wi-Fi connection. Wasting precious minutes on a carrier’s plan when you still have a lot of data is also frustrating – for the few of you who don’t have unlimited minutes. Of course, there have always been workarounds for these issues, including Google Hangouts integration , but soon you’ll get Wi-Fi and mobile data for calls right in the Google Voice app.

The new feature isn’t ready yet, but you can sign up to test it on Android or desktop right now (iOS support “coming soon”). All you have to do is go to this page and fill out the form. Then update the Google Voice app and wait for an email from Google with more information .

If you rely on Google Voice for all of your calls, there are a few early pitfalls to consider before you sign up for beta testing. The new feature appears to make it difficult to make calls using a Bluetooth headset and disables the ability to record or send incoming calls. On desktops, Wi-Fi and data calling are also limited to Chrome , but Google is working on support for other browsers as well.
