How to Block Pop-up Notifications on a Website Using Firefox 59

For three days last week, I received a push notification every time Space.com posted an article. While I definitely love my share of space stories, I’m not a huge enthusiast. The notifications started when I accidentally clicked on a push notification asking if I wanted them, and then I was too lazy to change it until it got so annoying that I couldn’t take it anymore.

Firefox launched Firefox 59 this week. New browser features include the ability to prevent websites from prompting you to send you notifications or asking if they can access your device’s camera indefinitely. If 59 was available before, I would never have space glitches.

There are some sites where you might actually need these notifications. For them, you can add them to your list of trusted websites and still receive notifications, blocking invitations from others you would not want to receive notifications from every 15 minutes.

The first search for a setting takes a little effort:

Download the newer version of Firefox first. Once launched, go to your browser settings. On a Mac, they’ll be called Preferences, and on a Windows computer, they’re called Options. From there, select the Privacy & Security tab on the far left of the page and then scroll down to the Permissions section.

In the Permissions section, you want to click on Settings next to Notifications. A pop-up window will open where you can configure this feature. It is disabled by default, so if you want to block future notifications, you can do so by clicking the box at the bottom of the square.

Alternatively, you can add any websites that need to be exceptions to the rule. For example, if you really want these space notifications, you would add them there. New websites that are interested in sending you notifications will be added here as you progress, but without permission to send them. You can return to this menu in the future and adjust these permissions as you see fit.

If you’re like me and accidentally hit those fields more often than you’d like, this is definitely a welcome addition to your browser.
