Duolingo Language App Finally Adds Klingon Language
Yes, yes, you can learn all kinds of normal languages with Duolingo, but can you learn Klingon? Until today ghobe ‘ (no), but DaH naDevvo’ SoH (now you can). Here’s how. Buy ngop!
Make your account
If you’ve never used Duolingo before, it shouldn’t take long to create a free account . It’s going to be slightly faster on the web than the Duolingo app for Android or iOS , and you should definitely grab any app if you’re serious about learning a new language. Taking a little time on your morning commute to practice vocabulary five days a week can do wonders for developing your skills. (And it’s fun!)
When you start setting up your new account, make sure you select Klingon as your primary language. That’s why we’re here, isn’t it? Good afternoon to die and that’s it.
Once you’ve made your choice, Duolingo asks how much time you’re likely to spend learning this new language each day. Do not waste 20 minutes on this if you know that you will only be looking at the site or application for 10 – be honest.
If you’ve just arrived from the No-Zone Tour, you may already have a little knowledge of the Klingon language. If so, you can take the Klingon Level Test – a phrase I never thought I would use – to give Duolingo a feel for your wonder. If not, consider starting with the basics.
Simplicity in space
You might feel a little disappointed at first, as Duolingo essentially drops you to the very end to get started. You hover over Klingon words and then select their English equivalents, which seems like an incredibly easy way to learn the language. If you borrow a phrase from Ira Glass, stay with us.
After you finish your first lesson, you will have a bit of the Duolingo experience and will be given the option to review what you just did or continue. Select the latter and you’ll be prompted to create a profile – super-useful for syncing your progress across all your Duolingo apps (and of course essential to getting the most out of the service).
From there, you’ll be taken to the classic Duolingo interface, where you can work on your language skills, check how you’re doing, and submit yourself for testing – no fighting required.
Don’t forget about the other sections of the site, including its discussion boards – if you want to discuss pronunciation with Klingon experts – and its laboratories , which allow you to find other Star Trek enthusiasts to meet and practice with Klingon. Alas, you won’t find any Klingon stories to read yet, but we always hope they come up someday.
