Clean up the Clutter on Your Mac Desktop

MacOS: Some people keep their computers neat and tidy. Some people are happy to keep their desk cluttered. For those who want a clean desktop but have trouble maintaining it, there is Declutter .

Keeping your desktop clean can speed up your Mac ; it will definitely help you to be less distracted and even calmer. You can simply create a folder on your desktop and upload all your files to it. But you might need a little more organization, and you might want an app that automatically moves files for you. This is the solution.

Declutter ($ 9.99) adds multiple folders to your desktop and filters your files into them whenever you hit the DECLUTTER NOW button. You can choose from several default folders, such as Pictures and Documents, and add your own by filtering by filename or extension. I made one for each PNG with the word “Screenshot” in the title.

Declutter can also automatically filter your files at regular intervals from 1 minute to 8 hours. The first few times, you might get a little nervous when all of your files are gone. You will get used to it.

Declutter isn’t the first app to try this; we showed others. But Desktoday went down and Clean started annoying users with ads for other apps. Also, we do not recommend Declutter Pro , the subscription-based version of the app; it looks more like a one-time purchase utility.

For $ 32, the rival Hazel app offers a dizzying array of advanced filters and actions. You can filter files by parameters such as tags, creation or modification dates, file content, and combinations thereof. You can tag files, move them to and from folders, import them into iTunes or Photos, and even run scripts. You can schedule daily or weekly activities. This is a really powerful way to automate your entire file organization. But if you just want to clean up your desktop, Declutter will suffice.
