Tell Us Your Tips for Amsterdam

Besides weed, there is plenty to do in Amsterdam! It is a beautiful cycling city with canals and famous museums such as the Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum. (Buy a museum card .)

Wikitravel has a long guide to Amsterdam with tips and tricks that hint at the charm of the city in a storybook: “Keep your tires out of tram rails; it’s a terrible fall. Always cross tram rails at an angle. ” Or, “Go Ice Skating Friday Night: Put on your skates and join the popular weekly skate tour that changes every week.” The article also examines the concept of hedogen – the policy of not observing all laws on vices . (This is why, although it is illegal to grow or sell large quantities of cannabis, police do not break into the doors of coffee shops where marijuana is dispensed.)

But there must be more. What else do you need to know about Amsterdam? What tourist trap do you just know some other ignorant commentator would recommend, and where should people go instead? If you do go to coffee shops and the red-light district, what is the etiquette? If you don’t, when pesky Americans are obsessed with them, what will you raise instead?

What should visitors learn about culture? What is dangerous, offensive, or generally misinterpreted? What’s overlooked in the city? When is the best time to arrive? And what is it like to live there? Are there tricks for getting around, areas best covered by unexpected modes of transport, streets or subway routes that should be avoided during rush hour? What makes you love the city?

What about internet coverage, a good cup of coffee, or bookings outside of regular hotels? We want to hear your most amazing and interesting tips, as well as any stories about how you used them. We’ll cover the best in a new post on Thursday. Tot ziens!
