Get Out of School and Demand Safer Gun Handling
On Wednesday, March 14, 2018, there will be a strike in national schools in support of arms reform. It is held under the auspices of the Women’s Youth Empower March, an initiative of the people who organized the Women’s March. Call on students, parents, teachers and allies to take part in a 17 minute strike at 10 a.m. in each time zone.
Why would you leave? Because shouting on Twitter is not enough. Because the physical movement of bodies on the street has worked before. Because, in the words of David Hogg, the teenage hero who gave a poignant message to politicians after surviving the mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School: “Ideas are great, but without action, ideas remain ideas and children die.”
Because that might be our only hope.
To update on the strike, which is called “Enough,” RSVP on the Facebook event and follow March Women onFacebook and Twitter , and the National School on Strike on Facebook and Twitter .
For students before you leave:
- Check your state and district attendance policies for the consequences of missing school. In California , for example, if you do not have a history of unjustified absences, the school cannot remove you from classes for peaceful care, and all unjustified absences should be treated the same regardless of the reason. (You can get an opinion if this is the usual punishment in your school for a valid absence.)
- Know your rights to free speech and what to do if your rights are violated. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has a governing body.
