This Toasted Buttered Maple Hummus Will Make You Reimagine the Genre
During what I can only call a “crisis of faith,” I made the trend known as “dessert hummus” and found it very enjoyable. When my (sweet and understanding) editor first (mildly) suggested that I try dessert hummus, I demanded a phone call, so alarmed by the concept was I.
“I just don’t think I can do what I recommend!” I exclaimed. “It’s going to be avocado and chocolate pudding again!” (Chocolate avocado pudding tastes exactly what you think – like chocolate and avocado.) But Alice soothed me with her soothing voice and convinced me to at least give it a try . (She also used the “Okay, just don’t do this” tactic, a trick my own mother used to get me to do gymnastics and sell cookies for Girl Scouts.)
We decided that the main thing is chickpea. Instead of smothering them with chocolate powder to make creepy valley cake dough , or mixing them with M&M to make them not quite cookie dough , they had to be treated like any other part of the plant that spans the kingdom. sweet and sweet. spicy. I wouldn’t add powdered chocolate or M&M to fried sweet potatoes, but I would sprinkle them with maple and bathe them in brown oil. This is what I chose with my sweet hummus and now I am traumatized by how much I like this starchy, nutty, sweet namaz.
But don’t take my word for it – I definitely wouldn’t! – do it and try it yourself. To do this, you will need:
- 1 cup cooked chickpeas (drain and rinse if using canned food)
- 1/4 cup tahini
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- A couple of pinches of fresh nutmeg
- Salt to taste
Add the chickpeas, tahini and maple syrup to a food processor and beat until smooth. Cook the butter in a skillet over medium-high heat until light brown and smells deliciously nutty. Turn on the food processor and drizzle with butter as you work. Turn off the food processor, scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl, and add the remaining ingredients. Stir until smooth and serve with fruit, pretzels, rice cakes (if you like), or anything that goes well with peanut butter. Grab a bite to eat, savor sweet hummus and join me in this brave new world.
