How to Translate Pronunciation Guides on Wikipedia

Let’s say you’re looking for a Moebius strip on Wikipedia and wondering how to pronounce it. Wikipedia only shows some of the detailed pronunciation instructions written in the international phonetic alphabet. You can start your Google search in a different tab, but there is an easy way to translate this pronunciation guide into simple English. Just hover your cursor over the letters.

Hover over each letter and a little explanation appears on Wikipedia, like the “o” in “code” . You can also click on the pronunciation to see a table showing each special character that matches its definition in regular English.

The non-English spelling of IPA is more difficult as these tutorials usually do not have a hover function. But you can still click on them for a full explanation of the sounds of that language in the IPA and then translate into English.

You can always just say [word] on Google, but you might end up with one of thespoofed YouTube accounts .
