Disable Those Pesky Browser Notifications Once and for All

You hate it as much as I do: it’s a little window that pops up whenever you visit a news site or blog, asking you to be allowed to eavesdrop on notification windows about things you aren’t interested in. Instead of giving up in defeat and learning to live with annoyance, you can stop sites from bothering you altogether. Here’s how.

Chromium

Click the menu icon in Chrome (three vertical dots) and select Settings. Scroll to the bottom of the settings page and open the “Advanced” section, where you can further change the behavior of Chrome. Scroll down and select the Content Options tab under Privacy & Security.

Select Notifications to see which sites are allowed or not allowed to invade your life. Disabling this feature completely will prevent sites from poking their noses into your browser asking them to show you notifications for whatever they want. Unfortunately, this means that the notifications you really want won’t show up unless you choose to individually toggle your notification settings for each site you visit. To completely disable this feature, set Ask Before Submitting to Disabled and rejoice.

Fire fox

If you’ve already given permission for sites to send you notifications, you can revoke this permission in your security settings. Click the menu icon and select Options, then select Privacy & Security. Scroll down to the Permissions section and select the Notification Settings icon. Here you can revoke notification permissions for sites individually or all at once.

Disabling notifications completely requires a slight modification to the Firefox configuration page. Enter “about: config” in the address bar and search for “dom.webnotifications.enabled”. Right-click the entry and select Toggle to set it to false and prevent notifications from being re-displayed.

Safari

Turning off notifications in Safari is pretty easy. Choose Safari from the Mac menu bar, then choose Preferences. Click the Notifications tab and uncheck the Allow websites to request permission to send push notifications check box.

Microsoft Edge

You can’t turn off notifications from within the browser itself, but you can delete sites that already have access to your notification service in Microsoft Edge. Click the menu icon in the upper right corner and select “Settings”. Scroll down to Advanced Settings, then select Website Permissions. There you can enable or disable site permissions, including notifications.

Turning off notifications altogether in Microsoft Edge means you’ll need to edit your system settings, specifically what permissions Microsoft Edge has for pop-ups without warning. Open the Start menu and select the Settings icon. Select System, then Notifications & Actions, where you can change which apps appear in your Action Center. Just scroll down to Microsoft Edge and turn it off.
