Interview for Global Entry When You Are Already Traveling

Global Entry is a traveler’s dream, but depending on the demand in your city, it may take a while to apply. To speed up the process, try Check In On Arrival if you are already traveling.

When you sign up for Global Entry, you complete an online application and (hopefully) get pre-approval. From there, however, you must schedule a personal interview to complete the application process, and this usually means a trip to the nearest airport. By checking in on arrival, you also have the option of being interviewed the next time you drive through a participating airport without even scheduling an interview.

After registering and waiting almost four months for my own application for international entry, the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sent me an email:

At check-in, global entry applicants who are conditionally approved can go through an interview, the last step of the global entry process while they go through US customs and border clearance or pre-clearance. This option is now available at:

  • Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS)
  • Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • Detroit Metropolitan International Airport (DTW)
  • George W. Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston
  • Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport (MSP)
  • Norman Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC)
  • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC)
  • San Diego International Airport (SAN)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
  • Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)
  • Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
  • William P. Hobby Airport (HOU)

From a participating airport ( listed here ), you simply follow “signs that lead you to CBP staff who will be able to pass your Global Entry interview during eligibility checks,” says the CBP website. You will only need the necessary documents for international travel (such as a passport), which you should already have if you are traveling anyway. For more information on the program, visit the CBP website here.
