Drinking Raw Onion Juice Is a Bad Idea No Matter What People Say on 4chan
The 4chan folks are the last, but not the first, and probably not the last to try to boost their testosterone by drinking raw onion juice. This is a terrible, terrible, bad, very bad idea.
Will Sommer, who writes a newsletter about conservative media, tweeted about the ongoing onion craze on the / pol / forum on 4chan . That’s where these screenshots come from, but click at your own risk . (A content warning about racist memes about onions that I wouldn’t even have thought of in 2015, someday I would have to print.)
Drinking onion juice or eating large amounts of raw onions is a bad idea because it reportedly tastes terrible and the consequences are that the onion smells of sweat from every pore for days, if not weeks. The residents of the message board would know about this if they checked how many times people have tried it before and reported it, for example, on the bodybuilding forums.
If you would like to try onion juice to boost testosterone levels:
First, consider why you think you need to boost your testosterone levels. Are you having health problems or are you just trying to impress your online friends? In the first case, it is better to consult a doctor.
Second, you should be aware that there are no randomized controlled trials on the effects of onions on testosterone in humans. Onion juice aficionados typically cite two articles to support their claims. One researcher at the Jordanian University of Science and Technology found that onion juice caused male rats to copulate faster, but less frequently. Another researcher at the Islamic Azad University in Iran found that onion juice increased the concentration of sperm in the testes of male rats (as determined by autopsy). In both cases, the rats did not need to drink onion juice, they injected it directly into the stomach.
You’re a rat? Would you like to copulate faster and with more sperm, but less frequently? Then perhaps you could take advantage of this research. For the rest of us, exercise and a sensible diet (go ahead and include onions if you like the taste) can maintain healthy testosterone levels. However, as general life advice, don’t follow the nutritional advice illustrated by the Pepe meme.
