Don’t Use Calculator on IOS 11.1

We already know that for different users, iOS 11.1 interrupts media playback , interrupts audio controls on the lock screen, and automatically corrects the word “I” to an unrecognizable character . But that’s not all! It also breaks the Calculator app.

For many users, the Calculator app in iOS 11.1 is so slow that it doesn’t log every button press. For example, as the tech blog Select All points out , if you type 1 + 2 + 3 = your answer will be 24, not 6. This is because the calculator doesn’t register + fast enough, so it reads your input as 1 +23. To avoid this in a calculator, you must type very slowly.

Until Apple fixes this, skip Calculator entirely. Try these calculators instead:

  • The dropdown search bar works fine and displays your entire equation, a feature that really should be included in the Calculator app.
  • Google Keyboard for iOS solves math equations right in the AutoCorrect panel.
  • Pay $ 3 for the Soulver Calculator App . It allows you to view and edit the entire equation, and even save it for future reference. ( The $ 12 Soulver Mac app does the same; I’ve relied on it for years.)
  • If you are looking for a scientific calculator, the Sweet Setup software review site recommends PCalc .
  • Hear unapproved commentators on every Lifehacker post on iPhone and upgrade to Android .

Hopefully iOS 11.2 fixes all of these annoying bugs, or at least replaces them with interesting ones.
