Make a Salad That Will Keep You Fed up for Hours
The word “salad” does not mean “useful” or lack of calories, but something in this word seems to imply a lack of them. Packing a salad for lunch seems to doom a person to pain in hunger or to work at a vending machine, but nothing more. We show you how to make a salad that will leave you full, contented and happy.
Salad is one of those things that can really be what you want. There are green salads, fruit salads, potato salads, and even soda-based salads . A salad is really just a bunch of food that has been seasoned in some way and can be eaten cold, preferably with a fork. I’ve always looked at “healthiness” as a bonus, but you will definitely get more benefit from a balanced, nutritious plant-based salad than a cured one. Here are some tips to help you cover the distance.
The grains help you move forward
Yes, there are grain salads where you swap leaves for farro or whatever, but I’m here to tell you that you can – and should – eat both. Adding a cup of millet, quinoa, farro, or even rice to a salad will add volume and fiber, and keep you feeling full.
Meat matters
Some protein is essential, and adding some can help prevent M&M’s 2 p.m. peanut break. Real meats like fried chicken, leftover steak or tuna are fine here, but there are other non-animal options like grilled tofu, seitan, soy curls, beans and legumes. Oh, and eggs. Eggs make the salad sing .
Fat feels good
Fat not only does amazing things in terms of taste, but it also has real stamina. Avocados, cheese, nuts, olives, and (again) meats and eggs not only prevent hunger but also improve the taste of the salad, which means you’re more likely to eat it. (What is pickled in fat works too: I add portobello pickled in olive oil to salads, which inspires me to eat bowl after bowl of greens.)
Satisfy your senses
Food is the surest way to stay hungry, so make sure your salad is what you want to eat. Your afternoon snack is not the time to experiment and check if you have enough raw carrots and celery. (You’ve got a lot of work to do, damn it.) Pick what you like and finish, and if you need tips on how to make the perfect salad, check out our guide here .
