How to Simulate Piano Playing: Lesson 1
Imagine someone is just starting to learn to play the piano. What does it look like? Hot cake? Did Mary have a little lamb? I sat down with composer Jason Oberholzer for a fun piano lesson that focuses on discovering new sounds and playing by ear rather than learning specific songs or reading sheet music. It won’t take you to Carnegie Hall, but it will force you to make music.
Over the next five lessons, Jason will explain octaves and fifths, notes and keys, how to simulate a song, and how to turn mistakes into music. In our first lesson above, Jason shows how the left hand sets the tone for the right hand to explore. It’s as sexy as it sounds.
This week we will have a new lesson every day. Come back tomorrow to inquire about the second part: the right hand!
