Use This Clever Trick to Paint in Perfect Two-Point Perspective
All drawing is about technique and skill – at least until you add artistic inspiration to the equation. And technique and craftsmanship are really just gimmicks when you think about it.
When I was in eighth grade, our drawing lesson ended with large drawings made in two-point perspective: rows of blocks and buildings disappeared into paired vanishing points on the horizon. We did it with long rulers – a time consuming and surprisingly imperfect system – but whether you’re a middle schooler drawing an imaginary city or a professional architect doing design, Reddit user awawawoooooo has shared a gif that shows a shiny shortcut:
In the GIF, the architect Reza Askaripour attached a rope to the vanishing points on a paper clip. Ascaripur pulls the paperclip to the point from which he wants to draw, and the rope runs in straight lines to the vanishing points. The paper clip can slide along the length of the rope, moving to wherever Asgaripour wants to retrieve.
awawawoooooo says of Asgaripour’s Instagram, “I would advise you not to go there. I’m amazed at how good he is. ” But don’t be intimidated by Ascaripur’s work – be inspired. Gimmicks and shortcuts will never make you an artist, but they can help you speed things up.
