Here’s How to Share Spotify Songs Without Leaving IMessage
iOS: Spotify’s latest update adds iMessage support , making it easy to share tracks with friends during text conversations. Best of all, both the sender and the recipient can play shared tracks without opening the app itself – at least until you want to listen to the entire song.
You might be used to sharing Spotify tracks while you’re in the music app and sending them to someone via iMessage. Sadly, the recipient had to log out of iMessage, open Spotify, listen to the track, and then log back into iMessage to come up with his harsh criticism of all electroclash songs. Now, thanks to the new Spotify keyboard app, they can preview the song right in iMessage.
To take advantage of this more flexible song sharing feature, you’ll of course need to install (and update) the Spotify app. You can access the new iMessage keyboard by clicking the arrow icon next to the text box, selecting the App Store icon, and swiping right until you click Spotify.
While the functionality is similar to Apple Music’s iMessage keyboard for sharing songs, Apple Music only lets you share tracks based on your recent listening history, whereas Spotify lets you select a song from the entire catalog without interrupting the conversation. You can send a 30 second track preview along with album and artist information. Spotify subscribers have the option to play the entire track with one touch.
It’s not the entire track, of course, but 30 seconds of melody is just enough music to give my opinion, and if I like the song, I’ll just save it to my Spotify app after I announce it as my new summer jam.
