This Study Is Trying to Destroy Your Precious Drinking Surveillance
Drinking is America’s new favorite pastime. I mean, what better way to flop on the couch and watch TV shows from start to finish during the day? But one study is trying to destroy magic for everyone.
You probably already knew that watching binge all day long is not the best for your health, as you know getting around is good for you or something. But new research from the University of Melbourne suggests that over-watching TV shows in general may make them less enjoyable. Viewing binge eating affects both your long-term memory and how much you enjoy the show, according to research published in the peer-reviewed journal First Monday .
Participants in the study who were asked to watch the programs vigorously formed a strong memory immediately after watching, but those memories of what they watched disintegrated faster than participants who watched the show daily or weekly. So, if you want to remember what you are watching, it’s better to give your brain some time to breathe and reflect on what you saw. Otherwise, people will ask you what you think of the new season of this super popular show, and all you can say is, “I think I liked it …”
Participants who watched the drink also rated their experience as less enjoyable compared to those who watched the episodes from a distance. This is not the first study to mention this. One study published in the Journal of Consumer Research shows that the faster you watch TV shows, the less enjoyment you get from them. It makes sense – too much is more likely to make it less interesting and less exciting. For example, rides in an amusement park are fun, but if you sit on the same ride all day, it loses its charm.
Ideally, this pace helps you pay more attention to what you are watching , remember it better, and thus have more fun out of it. You have time to think, come up with your own theories, and create an all-powerful anticipation for the next episode, which will make it more exciting when it’s finally time to watch. But be that as it may, I will continue to watch the binge. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have Bojack Horse, Narco, Portlandia and my 20th viewing of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
