The Dishwasher Won’t Save Your Valuables During a Hurricane
There are many tips for hurricane preparedness, including one tip to keep valuables in the dishwasher because dishwashers are waterproof. Do not do this.
Ralph Feldkamp, an appliance owner and repair shop in St. Petersburg, Florida, told the Tampa Bay Times that he sees dishwashers flooded all the damn time. If your house gets flooded, your dishwasher is likely to flood too. Dishwashers can also turn on during a storm or be blown apart by the wind.
Other bad advice includes covering the windows with duct tape (they will still break, but they will be larger, which poses a greater danger to nearby people and objects) and keeping the windows open (this does not save your windows and just leaks water, so that you will return to a moldy house).
