Ignore Early Fall With DIY Otters
The last time we checked our staff’s weekly updates , our editors were busy with noise cancellation, food preparation, and experimenting with quieter commute options.
Our self-improvement efforts this week have ranged from completely ignoring fall (hello sandals and otters!) To preparing for the colder months to come (consider throwing pillows, comfy blankets, and closing in a room with reading materials and video games).
What updates have you made this week? Let us know in the comments.
Experiment with your own otter
“I made Otter Pops-style ice cold treats for Labor Day BBQ and they were a hit. They were just like them , but no booze. (I’ll definitely add a drink next time.) I made two flavors: a cold drink (cold drink + chocolate ice cream + milk) and strawberry with cream (strawberry yogurt + strawberry jam + fresh strawberry + milk and cream). I filled these long plastic bags with a jug with a spout, stuck them in the freezer overnight, and you’re done. Both children and adults were delighted with this surge, especially since it was 95 degrees Celsius outside. Someone I just met even called me “the coolest mom ever.” Yeah, now it’s my favorite dessert. – Michelle Wu, staff writer
Swim in seawater sandals
“Every woman who loves to frolic in the water should have a pair of sandals with sea water. [ Editor’s note: If you have fussy feet that require comfort and support, you should NOT have a pair of seawater sandals. ] They are SUPER CUTE and always look great no matter how much water you frolic in. You can splash around on the beach, hose off the sand, and wear them to dinner. I have the original in tan and every time I wear it I get compliments. ” – Claire Lower, staff writer
Embrace a dying print medium
“This week, I embraced analog reading in two ways: First, I finally figured out why I haven’t received copies of The New Yorker since I moved in July. (Answer: I accidentally gave them the address of the house next door when I updated the mailing list. Oops.) Second, I participated in the Labor Day sale and bought a year ‘s Bon Appetit for just $ 10, along with a very pretty tote … Apple bone tea for me. – Virginia K. Smith, Managing Editor
Enhance your typing experience
“Of course, touchscreens are the future, but I still love making clicks when I can. I have a fancy mechanical keyboard connected to my computer at home, and I rarely use a keyboard that is too small on my new MacBook Pro, despite its pleasant typing tone. Instead, I used my new favorite typing tool, the Logitech K811 Easy-Switch Keyboard . It is a compact Bluetooth keyboard that allows you to switch keyboard controls to three different devices. It charges via the Micro-USB port and lasts quite a while before it needs another recharge.
Right now, it’s connected to my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook (which sits on a stand), making it super easy to get in and out of each, to type, reply to text, or reply to an email. Lately, I’ve been taking it with my iPad to a local cafe on weekends, where I transitioned from reading comics to writing IGPX fanfiction. Satomi’s team for life. ” – Patrick Austin, Staff Writer
Cozy yourself in the colder months
“ Now that the nights are getting cooler, I brought my favorite Afghan from the vault. I started knitting it earlier this year and really enjoyed working on the square every night, usually listening to a podcast. It’s a pattern that’s fun to look at but easy to knit, so I’m looking forward to snuggling up to it and making it even bigger and warmer. ” – Beth Skorecki, Staff Writer
Run your side projects on schedule
“I’m writing a podcast from a script with my friend Tim, but without a deadline, we’re going too slow. This week we started planning the times we write alone and setting goals to achieve by the next meeting. It added responsibility to our project and made it less of a twisty hobby. ” – Nick Douglas, Staff Writer
Spring for more shaggy throw pillow
“This week I ordered this pillow , which I was already caressing in the store, while many people asked if they could help me, and I barked:“ Can’t you see that we are in love? “It will change my experience of sitting on the couch (and sleeping). I predict that while I and my family will love this soft pad, my dog will lose his damn mind. She will be his # 1 fan, by which I mean she will court her every chance she gets. ” – Alice Bradley, Associate Editor
Follow your destiny
“ Destiny 2. Farewell to the real world.” – Patrick Allan, Staff Writer
