Plan Your Weekend Trip With Fall Foliage Prediction Map

Pumpkin spice and thick scarf lovers, rejoice: autumn is just around the corner. And if you’re planning a trip to see the leaves change, you no longer have to rely on prank luck or geotagged Instagram posts to tell you the best time to travel, thanks to a prediction tool that tells you the best time to go green.

This interactive map from SmokyMountains predicts leaf changes. Predictions are based on historical information such as precipitation, temperature predictions, and foliage trends compiled by the National Meteorological Service, using over 32,000 data points to create a foliage map that predicts changes all the way down to the county.

Drag the date slider to see how each region in the United States changes at a different rate: the midwest begins its transition from summer to autumn in early September, and then northeast. This is a great way to plan a vacation, sightseeing trip, or even an enjoyable camping trip if you have the right equipment .
