Helping Hurricane Harvey Victims
High rainfall and high winds from Hurricane Harvey have already wreaked havoc on Texas, and more flooding and damage is expected to hit the area by the end of the weekend. And when people return to their homes and work after evacuation, they are likely to find tons of damage, damage that they need help fixing.
If you live in the Texas area, helping can be as simple as offering temporary accommodation to a friend in need, or helping someone you know clean up after the storm has broken. If you are not in Texas (or even if you are), there are many other ways to help.
Red Cross
The Red Cross has already dispatched several disaster relief workers to the area, providing items such as shelter, blankets and basic necessities. You can donate on the group’s website , over the phone by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS, or make a $ 10 donation by texting REDCROSS to 90999. If you would like to help in person, the group has a volunteer … registration page here.
Salvation Army
The Salvation Army is also planning post-Harvey relief efforts as well as offering long-term disaster relief. You can sign up for a one-time donation to her efforts on the group’s website, or set up a recurring monthly donation.
South Texas Blood and Tissue Center
If you live in the South Texas area, the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center currently has a daily blood supply and needs a donation. You can schedule a donation time by visiting the group’s website or by calling 210-731-5590.
Texas diaper bank
The Texas Diaper Bank is asking for a donation of cash and diapers to offer them diapers for families displaced by the hurricane. You can make a donation on the group’s website and indicate that you want your funds to go specifically for disaster relief.
