Solar Eclipse Didn’t Ruin Your Period

The recent solar eclipse was a powerful event. Whether you’ve traveled hundreds of miles to see the totality, or just stepped outside during your lunch break to share a pair of eclipse goggles with a friend, you’ve had a wonderful astronomical and social moment. You may be feeling a strong intellectual or spiritual connection with the sun and moon right now. But this connection does not reach your womb.

However, you will not recognize this from the header stream. In Marie Claire : Women have noticed a strange side effect of today’s solar eclipse . In Teen Vogue : How A Solar Eclipse Can Affect Your Menstrual Cycle . The Fuss article has a similar headline – ” How a Solar Eclipse Could Affect Your Period Even If You Don’t Even Know It” – but the article quickly refutes this connection.

These articles are based on anecdotes – a handful of women claim to have had strange periods in the past few weeks – and call for astrological and mystical energies. At least the Teen Vogue article was categorized as spirituality. Because physiologically , nothing happens here .

Undoubtedly, the moon influences the ebb and flow. And yes, the Moon’s 28-day orbit may coincide with the menstrual cycle of some people. But this does not mean that the lining of the uterus feels the attraction of the moon. And even if it were – and it is not – the exact visual alignment of the Sun and Moon is not much different from the standard “spring” tide , when the Moon and Sun are on the same side of the Earth.

The eclipse was a grand event that united millions of people around an astronomical phenomenon. There is a lot of topical science there. And if you have really unusual periods this week, you might want to see your doctor.
