Where to Find Shorts for Girls That Are Not “short Shorts”
We want our girls to know that they can do anything: climb trees, play football and reach for the stars. But based on the available clothing options, we force them to do it in shorts that rise above the buttocks and rub the inner thighs.
My daughter is four and wears mostly leggings so far, but I often hear parents of teenagers, teenagers and even elementary school girls complain about the lack of practical length denim shorts in stores. They mostly find “micro shorts,” which the Wall Street Journal describes as “shorts that are just 2.25 inches wide” and “marketed as short, short, or short.” This is the best-selling uniform at American Eagle Outfitters.
Hey, I think girls should be able to wear whatever they want and a lot of girls want to wear micro shorts. But I also think they should know that they have options. That doesn’t necessarily mean raiding the boys’ section in search of shorts, unless the baggy fit above the knee isn’t their thing. There are a large number of companies that offer bermuda shorts with a nine-inch inner seam or midi shorts (sometimes called midi shorts) with an inner seam of about four or five inches. Both styles are cute and functional.
Here are a few places to find longer shorts for girls (and a DIY option):
Old navy
Old Navy sells midi shorts above the knee.
Target
Target’s Cat & Jack line offers shorts in various lengths, including lace trim .
J.Crew Factory
Find Bermuda shorts in any color at J.Crew.
The girls will
One mom named Sharon Choxy was so sick of not finding comfortable, frill-free clothes for her active daughter that she created her own clothing line. Girls Will Be offers “not so short” shorts that are not baggy but have room to move around. They are currently out of print but are expected to return either late this fall or early next year.
