MoviePass Now Offers Unlimited Movies in Theaters for $ 10 Per Month
Ever dreamed of a Netflix-style subscription service for new movies that just hit theaters? Well, there is. It’s called MoviePass, and now for just $ 10 a month, you can watch one movie a day in just about any movie theater.
MoviePass is not entirely new. It has been around since 2011 , but before the membership cost was much higher and people didn’t bite. Now, Mitch Lowe , co-founder of Netflix and former president of Redbox, is trying to change that by dramatically lowering the cost . Starting today, you can head over to the MoviePass website or download the app on iOS or Android and sign up for a new subscription for as little as $ 9.95 a month, which is frankly a bit crazy.
This price gives you the opportunity to watch one movie every day in any cinema in the United States that accepts debit cards (this does not include 3D or Imax screenings). Yes, for less than the cost of a single show (in most cities), you could watch around 30 a month in over 4,000 cinemas nationwide if you went there every night. Obviously you are not going to do this. But if you watch at least one movie a month, your membership pays off! (One caveat: you can only buy tickets on the day of viewing – and in many cities only in person, as opposed to an electronic ticket – making it difficult to use MoviePass for theaters or films that are particularly likely to sell.)
I don’t know how their business model will work – MoviePass still pays theaters the full cost of each ticket, but as a movie buff who usually pays $ 18 or more per screening and would like to go to the movies more often, I’m definitely on board. I also noticed that MoviePass runs in a small independent / foreign cinema near me, so that’s a nice bonus. Their website is already picking up steam, but I was still able to sign up (slowly but surely). You can try your luck at the links below.
Update : AMC, the largest movie theater operator in the US, released a press statement saying they hope to block MoviePass subscriptions from being used in their cinemas in the future. AMC also noted that the new $ 10 subscription plan is “a wobbly and unstable program” and that they “will not be able to offer discounts on MoviePass in the future.” However, AMC doesn’t really know if MoviePass can be dropped, so the service should work in AMC theaters if they accept debit cards.
