Internet Archive Returns HyperCard

HyperCard, the graphically hyperlinked Mac app that influenced the invention of the Internet, was invented by Apple engineer Bill Atkinsonafter an acid trip 30 years ago this weekend. Now the Internet Archive has brought it back with a collection of over 3000 stacks of hypermaps that you can explore right in your browser. Each stack opens inside an archive emulator on an early Macintosh computer.

You can explore stacks such as the Seinfeld manual, origami instructions , chemistry pictures , music sequencer , tarot card reader, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula e-book . Each is like a grainy CD or early web page. The browser interface takes a few minutes to load and is rather clunky, but you can download the stacks and run them on your own Macintosh System 7 emulator .
