The Best Way to Eat Crispy Tacos

Hard-shell tacos can fall apart in your hands after a couple of bites if you’re not careful. The trick is to hold it correctly and bite on both sides as you go.

In the diagram I drew above – inspired by Mark Richt’s sandwich-eating philosophy – you’ll see my preferred approach to crunchy food, be it a fast food chain or a sedentary Mexican restaurant. Begin by holding the tacos near the center, pressing with your fingers along the flesh line. If you stick higher, you risk breaking the fragile shell. If you hold it a little lower, you will not be able to grab the tacos from above, as I do.

Take your first bite at the end of the taco. I recommend the classicneck taco method . Then make the next two small pieces, marked above, working towards the center. Now turn it around and repeat the process on the other side. Eventually, you will be left with two large bites in the center, and the shell will remain intact. Enjoy these last moments of delicious taco bliss. Alternatively, if you are making really big bites, you can replace 2 and 3 with just “2”, replace 4 with “3”, replace 5 and 6 with “4”, and replace 7 and 8 with just “5”.
